The GSC used the 44 Magnum (Dirty Harry's model) as it was easier to carry. The training was specifically done for protection against polar bears which roam hunting for food on land during the summer. They hunt everything anything including people. Geologists would be prime targets as they wander around, looking at rocks, sleeping in flimsy tents; always wondering it that white speck in the distance is a polar bear or grizzley (brown speck).
