Stephanie Knows the Ropes

STEPHANIE Peatling of the Silly Moaning Herald understands the appropriate relationship journalists must maintain in their dealings with the powerful, most particularly our Prime Minister:

If you have wondered why this government has survived a stellar record of incompetence without ever being called seriously to account, the reluctance of Peatling and many like her to be thought other than a prime ministerial allies and all-round team players may help to explain things.

It also helps to explain why Fairfax circulations are plunging -- down 25 percent in a single year at Peatling's former roost, the Sun-Herald. If Fairfax survives long enough to welcome a new owner, that relationship between bum-kissing and near bankruptcy would be worth bearing in mind.

(Thanks to Bob on the Murray for noticing Peatling's eager debasement)

UPDATE: Just imagine if, instead of tut-tutting into her nosegay, Peatling had spoken up, perhaps to say something like this: "Now hang on a tick, Prime Minister, there is more than one of us rolling their eyes. Some straight answers, please, and you'll get a lot more respect."

  1. Very important that any display of disrespect from journalists towards politicians is “called out”

Exhibit A – Someone rolling their eyes in response to … well …. eye-rolling inducing obsfucation from the Crayfish.
Exhibit B – Virginia Trioli caught on camera during an interview with Barnaby Joyce doing the circular movement of the forefinger around her ear (which we used to use in primary school to denote what we then called “spazzos”)

I can think of a journalist or two from many years ago who would have replied "You don't think you're being a little precious, Prime Minister?"

They're a lesser breed nowadays. Why, I bet they couldn't get a hurled typewriter even three metres.....

    1. Or reduce a telephone to minute particles with one slam of the handset.

  3. "Mr Blewitt, according to people who know him, has been described as a complete imbecile, an idiot, a stooge, a sexist pig, a liar, and his sister has said he's a crook and rotten to the core."

A recent quote from our PM. For me this comment is the lowest point in our modern political history. That a prime minister has chosen to reveal such a tragic lack of character, self restraint and maturity is one thing. That the public don't seem to care what she says or who she is, is another thing entirely.

  4. More disturbing is that we have a media that allows such disgraceful, undignified behaviour from a Prime Minister without even a hint of challenge. I guess it all part of the de-maturing of society. Could anyone imagine Menzies or Fraser behaving like this? (Keating....maybe).

  5. It's a moot point. Women can't be trusted to write anything insightful about Prime Ministers, or politics for that matter. Better to save yourself the time and eschew female writers and radio jocks as a matter of routine. On TV they're still worth watching for the curves

  6. Funny moment in Question(able) Time today:

Gillard sniping sneeringly at Julie Bishop, spitting * out: "She met with Blewitt - that's the kind of company she keeps - says it all really" (or words to that effect).

The opposition benches found the irony hilarious. As did I. Dont know that the Government benches got it though.

*I nearly got an alliteration out of that !

Journalists should never roll their eyes and definitely never look at their watches in the hallowed presence of Lady Julia, to whom all honour is to be given and from whom all crap is to be accepted gratefully and written up as the most positive and glowing exampling of the beneficial reign (long may it continue) of this paragon of female probity and -

oh hell, excuse me while I puke, and conclude it properly -

    this paragon of crapitude.

  8. It is the solemn duty of every man aspiring to be free to roll his eyes at those who lord over him, his subjugation by them. And then some.

  9. The sheer loathing, contempt and disgust I feel for this vacuous, shit-brained facile twerp could not be adequately conveyed with a simple eye-roll. Nothing I'd like more than to publicly humiliate the cow, and knock the metophorical wind out of the gas-bag. Is there not a man amongst these children, to stand up and ask the questions from journalist to politician, and not be expected to kow-tow like a servant? Gutless and spineless, the lot of them. Not surprising when the quality of discourse emanating out of the mouth of the red-headed sewer-brain is no better than a loudmouthed tart in the back bar of a shitty pub.
