COULD it be that there is still someone inside Fairfax with a little wit and a sense of puckish mischief? Here's the headline on Nicholas Reece's opinion piece in today's Age:
And who is Nicholas Reece, you may wonder?
Why, he's "a former senior adviser to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and premiers Steve Bracks and John Brumby"
Perhaps it should be 'Sell the fabian/progressive/left's ABC? Never!'
ReplyDeleteNow if ever there was a reason for a referendum this is it. The public should be consulted how it would like to spend taxpayer money, in this case to support a leftist platform. If you can't sell it or close it down then at least disable it's politically biased new services along with those on SBS.
Referendums should not be isolated to constitutional changes but become a means for voters to redress the excesses of government by gaining sufficient support by either an open campaign raised on the government's website or sufficient signatures endorsing the proposal for Governor General to intervene and call for a public vote to approve/deny the requested mandate.
Disillusioned - Referendums are very open to some serious manipulations, as the mooted Republic one would have been.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid the only proper response the recent excesses of the ABC is an immediate slash, burn and disperse. And quickly.
If t'were to be done at all.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) B. - I agree with your observation on the referendum for a republic. The question that should have been asked outright is 'should Australia become a republic?' which if voted for successfully would then have been followed by proposals as to which model would have be accepted by the voters with another referendum after shortlisting various models by COAG. Yes I now that asking politicians to decide the model is self defeating but the need to in some way provide a shortlist without a drawn out referendum process. Perhaps an initial vote by the public on all models with the top two models put to a referendum. It would be great if the public could have direct input to legislation as per the US model at voting time.
