A friend of the Billabong, a rock-ribbed Ronald Reagan-loving free marketeer, writes that he has been sending the clip below to Labor-voting acquaintances:
Surprisingly, given the left's legendary good nature, he has been much abused by return email. There is just no pleasing some people.
My first vote and I voted for Gough: Labor's pitch was heady wine for young folk like me. Within 6 months I was bitterly disillusioned and disgusted at myself to the extent that I have never voted Labor again.
I had the same experience with Hawke - first and last time. I remember in 2007 someone writing that Rudd would be like Whitlam on steroids - Lord God was that right.
At about that time we used to sing a novel version of the National Anthem
God save our gracius Gough, Least Bob Hawke knocks him off, God save our Gough Send him victorious, Always vainglorious, Longs to reign over us God save our Gough
Gough's old seat of Werriwa looks up for grabs by the Coalition. If it falls, the shock may be too much for the old ham (not a death threat). Still, he'd be happy to know that his crown as probably the worst PM since Federation has definitely been usurped by Rudd and Gillard, and he'll just have to be satisfied with third on the podium.
There was an album called, "And the Word was Gough" released back in the heady days of the previous wanna-be messiah. It features Peter Luck and Michael Carlton.
I have a copy here somewhere, lots of stuff packed away during the renovations, including several thousand vinyls.
"Authorised by M Young, Ainslie Avenue, Canberra" would be Mick Young. Pardon my fading memory cells, does anyone know which advertising agency put it all together? I'm guessing Phillip Adams, but I really don't know.
That was Bert Newton 2 from Bobby Limb's left. Seriously manicured sideburns.. I dips me lid in Bert's direction.
Love to know all the other folk are. Tim Brooke-Taylor at 0:56.. Chris Martin nodding away knowingly to himself at 0:58.. Thérèse Rein-Rudd at 1:21.. Mike Gatting in the red jumper at 1:44 [ease it up a notch, there, Mike!].
"It's morning again in Australia..."
ReplyDelete'Big Hair' song, eh, Prof? Watched half of it, and then chickened out. Prefer an Irish pub for group singing.

And here is another reference to the "Gough" album: right on cue, from ABC 666.

ReplyDeleteI think it was the first time for casting a vote. I did not vote for Whitlam.
ReplyDeleteI love the voice of the announcer at the end of that clip, he sounds like an international jewel thief. Listen to it again... Am I right? Totally!
